The Bateau Group, LLC ("we," "us," or "our") operates the FoodLife app. This Privacy Policy explains what stays on your phone, the little that leaves it, and the choices you have.
What Stays On Your Phone
Your profile — name, email address, phone number, height, weight, birthday, sex, activity level, and your dietary and fitness goals — is stored on your device. So are your pantry, your meal plan, your logged meals and your history. We do not have a copy.
Photos And Messages
When you scan a receipt, a shelf or a product, or send a message in chat, that photo or message is sent to Anthropic's Claude API through our server so it can be read, and the answer comes back to your phone. Our server does not store it. Anthropic processes it to produce the answer and may retain it for a limited period to monitor for abuse, under its commercial terms, which do not permit using it to train its models.
Assistant Usage
Every time the assistant reads a photo or answers a message, our server records how much work it took (the number of requests and their size, by day) against your random install identifier and your subscription's Apple transaction number. It never includes what a photo showed or what was said. We keep this even if "Help improve FoodLife" is off, because it is how the fair-use limit works, how we know what the service costs, and what we tell Apple if you request a refund. If you delete your usage data in Settings, these counts stay but are no longer tied to your install identifier.
What We Collect About Usage
Unless you turn it off, the app sends us a count of which features were used and on which day, and — when you confirm a receipt — the store it was printed at, the date printed on it, and the items and prices on it. This is tied to a random identifier created when the app is installed. It is not tied to your name, email, phone number or Apple ID, it never includes anything about your body, your photos, your messages or what you ate, and it never includes the time of day. We use it to see which features are worth keeping, to find problems, and to understand what shoppers buy. Along with it come the app version, the iOS version and the country your connection comes from (worked out from the network, not from your location). Turn it off, or delete what has already been sent, in Settings under "Your data."
Sharing Your Profile In Ranges
Also only if you turn it on ("Share my profile in ranges", off unless you choose it), the app sends your profile as ranges, never exact values: your age band (for example 35–44), height band and weight band (10 cm and 10 kg wide), sex, activity level, goal, diet, which of the app's listed foods you avoid and allergies you have, and whether you have added other allergies or dislikes — never what you typed. Each range only adds one to a running total, such as "how many people are 35–44"; we do not store your install identifier or anything else with it, so the totals cannot be traced back to you. A weight that came from Apple Health is never included. Turning it off, or "Delete everything", takes your ranges back out of the totals.
Support
If you write to us, we keep your message and the address you gave us so we can reply. Any screenshots you attach are kept with it for 90 days, then deleted. The app version and phone model come with it. Your random install identifier is included only if you leave "Include diagnostics" ticked.
Subscriptions
Purchases are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details or your Apple ID. Apple tells our server when a subscription starts, renews, ends or is refunded, identified only by Apple's transaction number, so the app knows your subscription is active. If you request a refund, we tell Apple how much of the service you used. Nothing else is shared.
Who Processes It
Our server runs on Cloudflare. Photos and messages are processed by Anthropic. Both act as our service providers and may use what they receive only to provide their service to us. Both process data in the United States, so if you use FoodLife from another country, what leaves your phone is processed in the United States.
How Long We Keep It
Photos and chat messages are not stored by our server. Support messages are kept as long as needed to help you and keep a record of it; screenshots attached to them are deleted after 90 days. Usage data and assistant usage counts are kept until you delete them in Settings or we no longer need them.
Security
What leaves your phone is encrypted on its way to our server, and access to the server is limited to the people who run FoodLife. No system is perfectly secure, which is one reason we keep so little.
Children
FoodLife is for adults 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has sent us information, email us and we will delete it.
What We Never Do
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
Your Rights
You may access, correct, or delete your profile at any time in Settings, and export everything the app holds. "Delete everything" removes what is on your device. Turning off "Help improve FoodLife" stops any further usage data and offers to delete what was already sent. Turning off "Share my profile in ranges" takes your ranges back out of the totals. For anything our server holds that Settings doesn't reach, such as a support message, email legal@bateaugroup.com and we will respond within 30 days. Depending on where you live, you may have legal rights to know about, correct or delete personal information; we honour these requests for everyone.
Health Information
Information about your body, your diet and your activity is sensitive. It stays on your phone, and it is never part of the usage counts described above. The only exception is the ranges described under "Sharing Your Profile In Ranges", and only if you turn that on.
Apple Health
If you allow it, FoodLife reads your weight from Apple Health so your targets follow your latest reading, and writes the meals you log to Apple Health as calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat. It reads and writes nothing else. Nothing read from Apple Health leaves your phone: it is never sent to us, never part of the usage counts above, never used for advertising, and never shared with anyone. You can change either permission at any time in the Health app under Sharing.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes within the app.
